Apple has released iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5, positioning the updates as a key step ahead of the company’s next major software push. Apple is expected to shift focus to iOS 27, which is anticipated to debut at WWDC in June.
The most notable feature in iOS 26.5 is Apple’s addition of end-to-end encryption for RCS messages. The update is designed to enable iPhone and Android users to message more securely. When supported by carriers, RCS chats will display a lock icon similar to iMessage, indicating that the content is protected by end-to-end encryption.
The change is presented as a significant move to improve cross-platform messaging security, particularly as privacy and data protection concerns continue to influence user expectations.
iOS 26.5 also adds the Pride Luminance wallpaper set, synchronized with Apple Watch faces. The update further aligns with Pride edition accessories, including Pride edition bands.
Another development in iOS 26.5 is the integration of Apple’s advertising platform into Apple Maps. Apple is expected to begin showing ads in Maps from this summer.
Some users have raised concerns that ads in Maps could make the iPhone experience feel more like Android. Others view the change as part of Apple’s broader effort to expand services revenue.
Beyond the new features, iOS 26.5 includes security refinements and other ecosystem updates.
Users can install iOS 26.5 by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
Apple also released patches for devices that do not support iOS 26, including iOS 15.8.8, iOS 16.7.16, iOS 18.7.9, and iPadOS 17.7.11.
