Bittensor co-founder Jacob Steeves described Samuel Dare’s departure as a “deep betrayal,” accusing his former colleague of intentionally inflicting “maximum pain” on the community and causing significant financial losses for investors.
Steeves’ comments came after Covenant AI’s exit, which was followed by a sharp move in TAO. According to the reporting referenced in the article, TAO’s price fell by 25%, wiping out more than $650 million in market value and leading to $9.1 million in long liquidations on April 10.
Steeves said Dare acted in a way that let down people who bought TAO and trusted him, while also acknowledging that the chain faces potential threats to stability. Dare, in turn, argued that TAO’s decline was tied to token sales by Steeves.
To move forward, Steeves proposed a protocol-level feature called “Locked Stake,” intended to enforce longer-term commitment and limit sudden exits or dumping by founders. He described the mechanism as “time plus stake,” referring to the remaining time before tokens can move.
Under the proposal, community members would lock tokens for a defined period. The article says this would increase transparency and align incentives with long-term ownership, aiming to replace purely human governance with cryptographic accountability.
Regarding Covenant AI’s exit, the community is reorganizing. The article states that Bittensor’s open-source architecture allows miners and remaining team members to revive the project, and Steeves emphasized that no single individual owned the vision for these subnets. He said functional operation should remain unchanged.
Steeves is set to present formal designs for the locked stake feature during an open Bittensor Discord call next Thursday, where he will answer questions from the community.
Despite the downturn, Steeves defended Bittensor’s mission, saying it remains “by far the most decentralized AI protocol in existence.” He also argued that the crisis could be a necessary evolution for a permissionless network designed to resist the darker sides of human nature.

Premium gym chains are entering a “golden era” that is ending or already in decline, as rising operating costs collide with shifting consumer preferences toward more flexible, community-based ways to exercise. Long-term memberships are shrinking, margins are pressured by higher rents and facility expenses, and competition from smaller, more personalized…
