For the first time in Vietnam, users can use a domestic banking app to scan QR codes for payments when traveling in more than 50 countries worldwide, including key markets such as China, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and many other European and American countries.
Shortly after the announcement of expanding cross-border QR payment services between Vietnam and China for Chinese tourists visiting Vietnam on April 3, 2026, Vietcombank said it would cooperate with Alipay+ to launch a cross-border QR payment service for Vietnamese personal customers in more than 50 countries worldwide. The bank said customers only need to use their VCB Digibank app to pay by QR in those markets, in a way described as familiar to users in Vietnam.
According to Vietcombank, customers can make cross-border payments by scanning QR codes using the VCB Digibank app while traveling. The service is positioned as eliminating the need to exchange Renminbi or carry a payment card for transactions in participating countries.
For Vietnamese travelers planning trips to China, Vietcombank said the rollout is particularly relevant because QR payments are widely used across everyday commerce. The bank noted that in China, transactions at convenience stores, restaurants, supermarkets, and attractions are largely conducted via QR, while cash is increasingly less accepted and international cards are not favored.
Vietcombank also cited the scale of QR acceptance in China through Alipay+. It said there are more than 80 million QR-accepting points in China’s Alipay+ network, enabling Vietcombank customers to pay easily without exchanging Renminbi or carrying a payment card.
Alipay+ is described as a cross-border payment platform operated by Ant International. Vietcombank said Alipay+ has over 1 billion users and more than 150 million payment-acceptance points across more than 50 countries, positioning it as payment infrastructure that connects across Asia and expands globally.
