Garrett Motion Inc. (Nasdaq: GTX) and TONFY, a Chinese provider of industrial temperature control and thermal management, announced a collaboration project aimed at advancing next-generation, high-efficiency liquid cooling solutions for battery energy storage systems (BESS) and other high-density infrastructure applications.
The companies said the project combines TONFY’s experience in integrating energy storage liquid cooling systems with Garrett’s oil-free centrifugal compressor technology.
Garrett’s compressor technology has shown performance in testing including:
Garrett’s oil-free high-speed centrifugal compressor technology is expected to be integrated into TONFY’s 80 kW liquid cooling units for outdoor containerized energy storage systems and other high-reliability applications.
The companies said integration is planned for both China and overseas markets, with plans for mass production in 2027.
They also said the collaboration will explore the technology’s potential in other high-density, energy-efficient cooling applications.
Both companies linked the effort to the growth of BESS, saying liquid cooling is critical to maintaining performance and reliability, particularly in demanding outdoor, continuous-duty environments.
Garrett said its solutions are intended to strengthen TONFY’s liquid cooling platform for energy storage and support a foundation for future collaboration in high-efficiency infrastructure.
Olivier Rabiller, president and CEO of Garrett Motion, said the companies are bringing Garrett’s oil-free centrifugal compressor technology—proven in demanding automotive applications—to the energy storage liquid cooling industry, with the goal of helping customers improve efficiency, reduce operating and maintenance costs, and enhance system stability.
Chen ZhenGuo, Vice President of TONFY, said TONFY is committed to adopting technologies that support next-generation energy storage systems and that Garrett’s oil-free centrifugal compressor technology is expected to enhance the efficiency and reliability of TONFY’s liquid cooling platform, strengthening competitiveness in the fast-growing energy storage market.
TONFY is described as a Chinese provider of industrial temperature control and thermal management solutions for new-type energy storage. The company’s offerings include liquid cooling, system integration, and high-reliability thermal management design, used in outdoor containerized energy storage systems, commercial and industrial energy storage equipment, and other applications requiring high stability and energy efficiency.
Garrett Motion is described as a differentiated technology leader with a 70-year history of innovation in automotive and beyond, including off-highway equipment, marine, and power generators. The company highlights its turbocharging expertise and technology solutions spanning fuel cell compressors for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, electric propulsion, and thermal management systems for automotive and industrial applications.
Garrett said it has six R&D centers, 13 manufacturing facilities, and a team of more than 8,700 employees in more than 20 countries.
