Heatwave conditions in Ho Chi Minh City are driving a sharp surge in air conditioner demand as the city enters its hottest period of the year. In the first days of April, purchases rose fourfold compared with March and more than doubled versus the same period last year, with distributors expecting the trend to continue into May.
At electronics centers and appliance stores across the city, retailers report that customer demand has accelerated rapidly since early April. Distributors said the current market stock of air conditioners is about 1.5 million units, and they plan to import an additional 500,000 units to meet rising demand in the near term.
While demand is increasing, input costs are also moving higher. Distributors cited production material costs—particularly copper—as having risen by up to 30%, attributed to exchange-rate fluctuations and higher logistics costs. These logistics costs are linked to fuel prices amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Despite higher input costs, retailers said air conditioner prices remain stable and no price increases have been recorded yet. They attributed this to the market primarily clearing existing inventory rather than relying on newly imported shipments.
“Prices could rise when new shipments arrive with higher input costs,” a retailer said.
The market includes around 40 brands, keeping competition intense. Retailers said this competitive environment is helping curb near-term price increases even as distributors prepare additional imports.
