Ho Chi Minh City Police have dismantled a counterfeit drug manufacturing ring that used foreign-brand labels and was led by Thai Chanh Kien, seizing thousands of finished drug boxes and nearly 800 kg of unpackaged tablets and capsules. On April 16, the Ho Chi Minh City Police Investigation Bureau charged and remanded Thai Chanh Kien, Ma Du Thai, and Van Tat Khang (all residents of Ho Chi Minh City) for the offense of producing and trafficking counterfeit medicines. According to case files, in late March 2024, investigators from the city's Economic Police discovered a suspect transporting goods of interest on Au Co Street and stopped the vehicle for inspection. From this lead, police raided and dismantled counterfeit drug production facilities operating at multiple locations across the city. During the operation, authorities searched multiple sites and seized over 4,000 boxes of finished medicines and about 790 kg of unpackaged tablets and capsules. Police also seized large quantities of packaging and labels falsely branded with foreign origins, as well as machinery and equipment used to produce counterfeit drugs. Investigations show that since 2021 Thai Chanh Kien began organizing the unlawful production of traditional medicines. By the end of 2024, he shifted to a more sophisticated method, producing counterfeit medicines and printing foreign-branded labels and origins to market them. Thai Chanh Kien employed workers to manufacture counterfeit medicines. In this ring, Kien is identified as the mastermind, directly overseeing the entire process, while two accomplices Ma Du Thai and Van Tat Khang assisted in designing and printing fake packaging. Notably, authorities warn that some counterfeit products in this group contained paracetamol, and the use of medicines of unknown origin with illicitly mixed ingredients poses serious health risks to consumers. The Ho Chi Minh City Police Investigation Bureau is continuing to expand the investigation to identify suppliers, distribution networks, and others involved to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.
