Users are advised to update their iPhones to the latest iOS 26.4.2 release to help protect personal information and sensitive data. Apple rolled out the update late on April 22 to address a security vulnerability tied to the notification-display feature.
According to Apple, the issue involves notifications that can display the content of messages on the lock screen even after those messages are marked as deleted. Apple says the message content is unexpectedly retained in the device’s cache for up to about a month.
The flaw is described as creating a backdoor that could allow law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, to use specialized forensic tools to recover messages that had been deleted or disappeared on the iPhone.
The update is intended to close the notification-related vulnerability that could expose message content beyond the point at which users expect it to be removed.
