Ministry of Construction approves Thanh Son Airport master plan for the period 2021–2030, with a vision to 2050, orienting the development of a joint civilian and military airport, with a capacity of 3 million passengers per year by 2050. According to the master plan, Thanh Son Airport will be located in Do Vinh Ward, Khanh Hoa Province, and will be a domestic airport combining civil and military use. For 2021–2030, the planning objective is to achieve an airport category of 4C (ICAO standard code), with capacity about 1.5 million passengers per year; the aircraft types to operate are Code C aircraft including A319, A320, A321, B737 and equivalents; approach method CAT I with the runway 04R, with simple approaches to runways 04L, 22R, 22L. With a vision to 2050, achieving 4C airport category with capacity of 3.0 million passengers per year; aircraft types Code C (A319, A320, A321, B737 and equivalents); CAT I landing at runway 04R, with simple approaches to 04L, 22R, 22L. By 2050, airport capacity is expected to rise to about 3 million passengers per year. The plan includes runways, taxiways, aircraft parking, facilities ensuring flight operations, technical infrastructure, aviation services, aeronautical and non-aeronautical works, and security, rescue and firefighting elements. According to the Ministry of Construction, land area demand for the project in 2021–2030 is about 2,115 ha, by 2050 about 2,094 ha. The Ministry assigns the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to finalize the planning dossier; coordinate with the Khánh Hòa Provincial People’s Committee and relevant agencies to publish, manage and implement the planning in accordance with regulations. At the same time, coordination with the Ministry of Defense units and local authorities to review and update national defense land use planning and local planning to ensure consistency across planning. Previously, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam had submitted to the Ministry of Construction for approval the Thanh Son airport planning dossier for 2021–2030, with a view to 2050. According to the management agency, approving the Thanh Son airport master plan aims to concretize the direction of developing civil and military aviation infrastructure in a synchronized manner, meeting the socio-economic development needs of the region, while ensuring national defense and security requirements and aligning with the orientation for the development of the national airport system.
