The visit takes place as Vietnam is the first country in the region selected by Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae for an official trip after she was re-elected as Japan’s Prime Minister in February 2026, reflecting Japan’s regard for the Vietnam–Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the new development phase.
In a solemn atmosphere, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung stepped onto the red carpet to greet Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, who led a high-level Japanese delegation on an official visit to Vietnam. A representative of Hanoi’s youth presented the Japanese Prime Minister with a bouquet.
After hearing military bands play both nations’ anthems, the two Prime Ministers saluted the flags and reviewed the Guard of Honor of the Vietnam People’s Army. They then introduced the high-level delegations of both sides participating in the ceremony.
Over more than 50 years of construction and development, friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Japan have been continuously strengthened and expanded across many fields, supporting Vietnam’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multi-polarity, and diversified diplomacy.
In November 2023, the relationship was raised to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and around the world, reflecting high political trust and mature development of bilateral relations. The upgrade created a foundation to promote substantive and more effective cooperation in the period ahead.
Economic and trade ties continue to develop steadily. Bilateral trade reached about USD 52 billion in 2025, up 11% from 2024.
Beyond trade, the two sides also maintain effective cooperation in education and training, science and technology, health, tourism, local cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Vietnamese community in Japan, numbering more than 680,000 people, remains an important bridge, contributing to greater understanding and stronger ties between the two peoples.
After the welcoming ceremony, the two Prime Ministers held a working-level meeting, conducted talks, and witnessed a signing ceremony, exchanging cooperation documents between Vietnam and Japan.
