Cybersecurity expert Ngô Minh Hiếu (Hiếu PC) has warned about a sophisticated phone scam that can cause victims to lose money from their accounts if they are not vigilant. In a post on his Facebook page, Hiếu PC said that the phone number shown on a recipient’s screen is not necessarily the number actually calling.
Hiếu PC explained the tactic as caller ID spoofing. Criminals do not need to use their real number when making a call. As a result, the recipient’s phone may display a different number, making the incoming call appear more legitimate than it is.
He noted that telecom regulators worldwide have warned that criminals can manipulate the displayed number or name so it looks trustworthy.
Hiếu PC described typical scam scenarios in which callers impersonate bank staff, police, or customer service. They often claim there is an “account issue,” “fraudulent transactions,” or that urgent action is required, such as stating a “credit card blocked” situation.
The objective is to keep the victim on the line and push them to follow instructions to transfer money or disclose sensitive information, including OTP codes, passwords, or card details.
Hiếu PC emphasized: “Any call requesting verification codes is a scam.” He added that “account issue” scripts are designed to manipulate the victim’s psychology.
Hiếu PC stressed that credibility should not be judged solely by the displayed number. Instead, focus on the substance of the call—whether it creates pressure, requests verification codes, or asks for money transfers.
