Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games and the Grand Theft Auto series, has fired its entire internal AI team, including the head of the unit. The move does not appear to be a layoff intended to replace human workers with AI; instead, it targets the group responsible for developing the company’s AI capabilities.
Luke Dicken, the former head of Take-Two’s AI division, said on LinkedIn that “my time at T2, along with my team’s, has ended.” Dicken stated that his team spent seven years building AI technologies to support game production. Take-Two did not comment on the matter.
CEO Strauss Zelnick’s public statements on AI have included elements that appear to conflict with the reported internal restructuring.
During February’s earnings call, Zelnick said the company was deploying hundreds of AI pilots across the group, including within studios. He also said AI-generated tools had helped save costs and time.
In the same call, Zelnick said Rockstar is not using generative AI for Grand Theft Auto VI. He described the game’s development as “handcrafted,” adding that “With Grand Theft Auto 6, generative AI does not have any role in what Rockstar is building. Its world is handcrafted—from each building to every street and neighborhood. That is what makes the entertainment exceptional.”
Last month, Zelnick reiterated skepticism about the limits of generative AI in an interview with The Game Business. He said: “The idea that new tools will let a single person press a button and produce a hit that reaches millions of consumers worldwide—that’s a joke. It’s never happened in the history of entertainment.”
Based on the available statements, Take-Two appears to be taking a cautious approach to generative AI as a central driver of its strategy. With a portfolio of franchises that regularly top annual sales charts, the publisher may not need to rely entirely on generative AI to maintain momentum.
As Grand Theft Auto VI launches, Take-Two could continue to dominate sales charts for years. Even if the next installment is delayed, Grand Theft Auto V is expected to keep selling while fans wait.
