During a period of urgent demand for construction materials for APEC projects and large-volume needs in a short time, the Vice Chairman of An Giang Province’s People’s Committee, Mr. Ngo Cong Thuc, conducted an on-site survey to assess mining activity and the supply of materials for APEC-related and other major public works in 2026.
The delegation visited the Tra Doc Lon and Tra Doc Nho rock quarries in Kien Luong commune, as well as the rock-mining site at Hon Soc Mountain in Hon Dat commune. The survey focused on ensuring sufficient output and timely delivery for APEC-related construction requirements.
The An Giang Department of Agriculture and Environment reported consolidated results from mining operators:
Given the urgent demand for construction materials for APEC with large volumes in a short period, the Vice Chairman urged the Department to review remaining reserves at the province’s rock quarries to ensure supply for APEC projects. This would support the Department in granting mining licenses to supply APEC projects while aligning extraction volumes with project needs.
He also requested mining operators and extracting units to ramp up capacity and equipment to ensure timely extraction and delivery. During extraction and supply, operators were directed to ensure accurate delivery addresses and prevent material leakage, with a clear requirement that there be no hoarding or price gouging. Any violations would be fully subject to the law.
The Vice Chairman directed Sun Group and contractor Olympia to urgently exploit the Tra Doc Lon quarry with a volume of 1.4 million m3 to supply materials for APEC projects. He also asked the People’s Committees of Kiên Lương and Hòn Đất communes to increase supervision of the supply, transport, and use of rock materials for the projects in the coming period.
APEC 2027 is described as a major event that will highlight Vietnam’s role in the region and create opportunities to promote the country’s image internationally. The event will be held in the Phú Quốc special economic zone, which is positioned as an opportunity for Phú Quốc to become a global hub for economic, social, and trade collaboration.
An Giang is concentrating on completing infrastructure for APEC 2027, including a project for the APEC Conference Center with a total floor area of 157,375 m2, comprising four above-ground floors and one basement. The conference and exhibition hall is planned to span 81m without columns and, upon completion, is expected to become the largest ballroom in the world, surpassing Caesars Forum in Las Vegas, with capacity for up to 10,000 people for large events.
In addition, the expansion project of Phú Quốc International Airport is reported to have a scale of nearly 22,000 billion VND and covers a total area of 1,050 hectares. The project is expected to raise the airport’s capacity to 20 million passengers per year, about 4.5 times the current capacity.
At a meeting on April 9, An Giang reported that key tasks had been basically completed, including finalizing master plans, investment procedures, selecting investors, starting eligible projects, and issuing the overall plan to shorten project timelines. Many projects are reported to be on track.
The progress of 21 projects serving the APEC Conference is divided into two groups:
Mr. Ho Van Mung, Chairman of An Giang Province People’s Committee, instructed the Department of Finance to coordinate with the Construction Department, the Phú Quốc Special Zone, Sun Group, and the provincial Office to finalize a report on the status of APEC-related projects and submit it to the Government.
The Chairman also required investors and project owners to direct contractors to implement “three shifts, four crews” to ensure progress and supervision. He asked the Department of Finance to coordinate with the Construction Department and project owners to accelerate disbursement for eligible projects.
Meanwhile, provincial leadership directed the Department of Agriculture and Environment to coordinate with investors, project owners, and contractors to ensure the supply of raw materials for the APEC 2027 works. The unit was also asked to continue finalizing the delineation of the area to reclaim and propose contingency policies, and to propose to the provincial People’s Committee policies to support affected residents.
