At the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vietnam’s General Secretary and President To Lâm, together with a high-level delegation, will pay an official state visit to the Republic of India from May 5 to May 7, 2026. The trip comes as Vietnam and India mark ten years of establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (2016–2026) and will be the first visit to India by To Lâm in his new capacity.
The visit is described as an important foreign-policy event. During the trip, the two sides are expected to review the implementation of the 10-year cooperation framework and discuss directions for the next phase of bilateral cooperation.
Vietnam’s Deputy Foreign Minister said the visit will help clarify common directions and shared strategic interests, while prioritizing each other’s foreign-policy goals. The two countries will also exchange views on issues of mutual concern and coordinate closely at regional and international forums.
In recent years, Vietnam–India relations have developed steadily and deepened. The countries have more than 20 bilateral cooperation mechanisms and many important documents have been signed.
Political trust has been reinforced through high-level exchanges, with defense-security cooperation described as maintaining effectiveness. Economic and trade cooperation has also grown positively, with bilateral trade reported at around 15–16 billion USD annually. India is among Vietnam’s top 10 trading partners.
Two-way investment continues to expand, with nearly 500 projects. The Deputy Foreign Minister said there is further room for cooperation in the near term.
The two countries are expanding cooperation into new areas including science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and satellite data. Cultural and people-to-people exchanges are also being encouraged.
During the visit, General Secretary and President To Lâm is expected to hold engagements in New Delhi and Mumbai, conduct talks and meetings with Indian leaders, and participate in activities aimed at promoting economic, science–technology and innovation cooperation.
The Deputy Foreign Minister said the visit is expected to become a milestone in elevating the traditional friendship between Vietnam and India, bringing tangible benefits to the people and enterprises of both countries and contributing to peace, stability, and development in the region.
