During the official talks on May 2, 2026, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae expressed Japan's willingness to continue supporting Vietnam in strengthening its technological self-reliance in areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and space. The two sides agreed to accelerate Japan's investment into Vietnam to reach 5 billion USD per year and to raise bilateral trade to 60 billion USD by 2030. Prime Minister Le Minh Hung welcomed the Japanese delegation and reaffirmed that Vietnam regards Japan as a key strategic partner, underscoring cooperation in economy, trade, investment, ODA, digital transformation, green transition, science and technology, food security, and sustainable energy. Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi thanked Vietnam for the warm reception and congratulated Premier Le Minh Hung on his reappointment, expressing confidence that Vietnam will achieve further successes under his leadership. Both leaders noted the importance of regional and international cooperation, agreeing to deepen collaboration across diplomacy, trade, investment, defense, cybersecurity, post-conflict reconstruction, and talent development for high-tech sectors. In science, technology, and economic cooperation, they agreed to accelerate joint projects, including climate-change adaptation, energy security, and energy projects (such as nuclear and gas-fired facilities), and to explore
crude oil supply arrangements for the Nghi Son refinery. Japan will continue supporting Vietnam's One Million Hectares of Rice Emission Reduction Project in the Mekong Delta. The leaders also discussed visa simplification to boost people-to-people exchanges and tourism. At the talks’ conclusion, six bilateral cooperation documents in science and technology, climate finance, irrigation, space, and emissions reduction were signed.
