On April 14, 2026, the Gia Lai Police Department’s Criminal Police Division announced it is investigating an online scam involving a prize-winning sweepstakes promoted through a social media scratch-card program.
According to the police report, on April 7, 2026, Mr. NCM, 49, from Gia Lai Province, participated in a prize-draw program run by the account “Cty Vé Cào Thần Tài 88888,” with a participation price of 299,000 VND.
After completing the process, the perpetrators contacted him via Messenger, claiming he had won a prize of up to 1.872 trillion VND. They instructed him to watch a livestream of the scratching to claim the prize.
To obtain the victim’s trust, the perpetrators guided him through a multi-layer scheme. They first demanded a processing fee, followed by a currency-exchange fee. The police said the scammers exploited an error in the transfer instruction content to require multiple repayments, while promising to add the additional sums to the prize.
The victim was then asked to pay personal income tax of 5% (93.6 million VND) and a fee for international transfers of over 190 million VND.
In total, Mr. NCM made six transfers to accounts provided by the perpetrators, totaling 368,622,000 VND.
To reinforce the deception, the perpetrators also sent fake screenshots showing a successful transfer of 1.872 trillion VND and asked the victim to wait 24 hours, stating the large amount was still being processed by the system. When no money arrived and the perpetrators stopped responding, the victim realized he had been defrauded.
The police urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid trusting prize-claim programs on social media, and refrain from transferring any fees to strangers to prevent asset losses.
