February 2026 saw Qwen set a record with 153.6 million downloads in a single month, accounting for more than 50% of the total open-source AI downloads across the industry, more than double the combined total of the eight next-largest competitors. Alibaba's open-source AI model suite Qwen is nearing the 1 billion-download milestone, cementing an absolute lead in the global AI market and leaving all rivals far behind when combined. As of March 2026, the total downloads of the Qwen model line stood at about 942 million, with February alone recording more than 153.6 million downloads, a figure never before seen in open-source AI history. More notably, Qwen currently accounts for more than 50% of the industry's total downloads, more than double the combined total of the eight next-best rivals. This growth has been driven largely by the release of Qwen 3.5 in February 2026. The new version is reportedly eight times faster than the previous generation, while operating costs are about 60% lower. The combination of high performance and low cost has made Qwen 3.5 an attractive choice for both independent developers and large enterprises. The rise of Qwen reflects a clear shift in the global AI landscape: since mid-2024, open-source models from China have surpassed their U.S. counterparts in total downloads. Earlier versions like Qwen 2.5 laid the groundwork for this transition by rapidly expanding to development communities worldwide. Alibaba's strategy is straightforward: provide a powerful model at low cost to build a large-scale developer ecosystem, then monetize through connected cloud computing services. This is a long-term AI infrastructure platform competition. Meanwhile, current rivals remain far behind Qwen. Meta's Llama, the nearest competitor, trails by hundreds of millions of downloads. DeepSeek drew attention with explosive growth, but cumulative usage remains far short. Models from NVIDIA and smaller AI firms show steady growth but scale remains limited. There is currently no competitor capable of closing the gap with Qwen in the near term. According to Thế Duyệt

Long-term memberships are shrinking, margins are pressured by higher rents and facility expenses, and competition from smaller, more personalized…
