After nearly 20 years of operation, the coastal road connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Lam Dong has been upgraded and expanded to meet the region’s transport infrastructure development needs. In June 2023, the Ba Ria – Vung Tau province People’s Committee officially started upgrading the road to a 6–8 lane scale, with a design speed of 80 km/h.
The project covers a total length of nearly 77 km, divided into 11 component sections, with total investment of over 7,000 billion VND. It is described as an important transport project supporting socio-economic development in the eastern area of Ho Chi Minh City.
Many sections are reported as basically completed. The section from the intersection with National Highway 51 to the Cua Lap Bridge—passing through marshland and fish-pond areas—has completed its asphalt layer. However, it cannot yet be put into operation because the junction with the Bien Hoa – Vung Tau expressway is still under construction.
At this junction area, overpass works are being completed by the contractor to synchronize connecting infrastructure.
In addition, the Cua Lap 2 Bridge linking Ward Vung Tau and Long Dat commune has been newly constructed beside the existing bridge and has been put into use, helping reduce traffic load in the area.
Other sections are also completed and operating stably. The section through Long Hai commune center has completed signaling, lighting, and sidewalk systems. The section through Nuoc Ngot Pass has completed asphalt surfacing and installed guardrails to ensure traffic safety.
In other construction zones, contractors are deploying multiple work fronts simultaneously, focusing on key items such as bored piles to ensure structural integrity.
The section from Nuoc Ngot Pass to Phuoc Hai commune is being widened quickly, with increased manpower and equipment to meet progress requirements.
For bridges along the route, the Sông Rây 2 bridge is under construction with its piers. Bridges such as Cua Lap 2 and Cay Khoe are being rebuilt alongside the old bridges, while some existing bridges—such as Go Gang and Cha Va connecting Vung Tau Ward with Long Son island—are preserved.
According to the plan, the entire coastal road will be completed and put into operation by the end of 2026. Once finished, the road is expected to complete regional transport infrastructure and form an important economic corridor connecting the Cai Mep – Thi Vai ports with Long Thanh airport and the Bien Hoa – Vung Tau expressway.
The project is also linked with the development orientation of the Long Thanh – Ho Tram expressway in the future. Some segments through tourist areas such as Bình Châu commune have been invested and expanded to 8 lanes, supporting infrastructure synchronization.
Accelerating progress on remaining items is expected to help the road realize its potential sooner, meet cargo transport demand and inter-regional travel needs, and promote regional economic development.
