During a state visit to China from April 14 to 17, 2026, Vietnamese General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm, accompanied by his spouse and a high-ranking delegation, attended a forum on higher education cooperation, science and technology, and innovation between Vietnam and China.
At Tsinghua University, Tô Lâm delivered a policy speech in which he described Vietnam and China as neighboring countries with many cultural similarities and deep ties, saying that friendship has been nurtured across centuries.
Tô Lâm emphasized that strengthening cooperation in priority areas is essential for joint development. He highlighted fields including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, big data, cloud computing, automation, robotics, green technology, biotechnology, new materials, and clean energy.
He noted that around 25,000 Vietnamese students are studying in China. Tô Lâm expressed the hope that students, including those at Tsinghua, will serve as bridges of friendship, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding.
Looking ahead, he called for deeper people-to-people exchanges, including youth, scholars, and educational exchanges, to reinforce long-term friendship. He urged that science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation be treated as new pillars of Vietnam–China relations, while ensuring that education and human resource development remain a strategic priority for rapid modernization.
Tô Lâm also encouraged expanding cooperation between Vietnamese institutions and Thanh Hoa University through joint training programs, exchanges, and shared laboratories in key fields.
