On April 20, Google announced that the Notebooks feature in the Gemini AI assistant has been made available for free to all users on the web platform.
Google said the update significantly changes the Gemini experience. Instead of starting a new conversation each time, users now have an organized workspace to manage projects and content. Notebooks is designed as an integrated working environment that lets users store conversations, files, and source materials in one place, so the AI can reference them when processing new requests.
The feature appears in the application’s sidebar, allowing users to save any conversation to a dedicated notebook. Users can also adjust the tone and formatting of responses. For those who do not want the system to use stored data, Google noted that memory can be disabled to receive independent responses.
A key element of Notebooks is its integration with NotebookLM. Google said this enables automatic synchronization of data sources between the two platforms. Users can search for information in Gemini and then continue working with that content in NotebookLM using tools such as visual presentations or illustrations, without manual data transfer.
Google provided the following limits for data sources per notebook:
The feature also supports all Gemini tools, including online search and other smart features.
Notebooks is currently available only on the web version. Google said it is expected to roll out to mobile devices and the Mac app in a few weeks.
Google’s decision to offer Notebooks at no cost on the web reflects a strategy to expand AI-powered productivity tools and broaden access for users.
