On the morning of May 5, the Department of Disease Prevention (Ministry of Health) provided information about hantavirus and preventive measures to help the public take proactive precautions.
Hantaviruses are a group of viruses that can cause severe disease in humans, including hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and dengue fever with kidney involvement. The disease can progress rapidly, with symptoms that may include shortness of breath, respiratory failure, hypotension, and it can be fatal.
There is currently no specific antiviral treatment for hantavirus infection. Treatment mainly involves monitoring, supportive care, and timely resuscitation at a healthcare facility.
According to information from the World Health Organization, in early May 2026 there were clusters of severe acute respiratory illness on a cruise ship traveling from Argentina through the South Atlantic.
