The component 2 project to build the Thượng Cát Bridge and the two-end road works was launched by the Hanoi People’s Committee on October 8, 2025. The project has a total investment of more than 7,300 billion VND, funded from the city budget, and is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2027.
Under the approved planning, the project starts at Km3+504 on Ky Vu Street in Thượng Cát ward and ends at Km8+731, connecting with National Highway 23B in Thiên Lộc commune. The bridge is designed as a cable-stayed structure, with a total route length of more than 5.2 km.
The main bridge is about 3.9 km long, including a 780 m crossing over the Red River in three large spans. The two approaches at both ends extend about 1.3 km, designed to integrate with existing infrastructure. The bridge cross-section is wide, with eight lanes: six lanes for motor vehicles and two mixed-use lanes.
Contractors have deployed multiple concurrent work fronts, focusing on key foundation items including bored piles, pier/pillar construction, and steel structure erection. The construction pace is described as intense, with teams working continuously to meet the schedule.
So far, the contractor has completed 41 out of 108 bored piles for the main spans. At main pillar locations such as P31 and P32, workers are concentrating on high-intensity bored pile drilling, supported by specialized equipment mobilized to the maximum to meet progress and technical requirements, particularly given complex geological conditions in the Red River area.
The Thượng Cát Bridge is described as one of Hanoi’s important transportation projects, contributing to the completion of connectivity between the northern part of the Red River and the capital. Once operational, it is expected to strengthen links between the northwestern area and the urban center, while reducing the load on existing river-crossing routes.
The project is also expected to support economic and social development in northern Red River areas including Đông Anh, Sóc Sơn, and Mê Linh.
