Police have warned that if people receive suspicious calls, they should hang up immediately and call back to ensure their safety.
When detecting signs of fraud, citizens are advised to contact the nearest police authority. They should also keep the phone number and the content of the call to support verification and investigation.
The Lai Chau Cyber Security and Crime Prevention Department said criminals are exploiting mobile network calling services using high-tech methods to spoof the number displayed on the recipient’s phone. As a result, the caller ID can show any number, including those of government agencies (such as the Police, Procuracy, Court), utilities (such as Electricity), Social Insurance, commercial banks, credit institutions, or a contact number saved in the victim’s phonebook.
Authorities noted that the displayed phone number is no longer a reliable basis for verifying a caller’s identity. Even if the number appears familiar, it may still be spoofed.
In cases where fraud is suspected, people should contact the nearest police authority and save the phone number and content of the call to assist verification and investigation.
