Thinh invested in the stock market with the goal of getting rich quickly but was unsuccessful, leading to insolvency and then an attempted robbery of a disabled lottery ticket seller. On April 15, the Ho Chi Minh City Police were holding Do Tran Phu Thinh (41) for investigation into the robbery of property. According to the investigation, on the afternoon of April 6, Thinh went to 336 Quang Trung Street, Go Vap Ward to buy 18 lottery tickets from a disabled man in a wheelchair. Taking advantage of a moment with few people around, Thinh grabbed the tickets and fled. Go Vap Ward Police, in cooperation with the City Criminal Investigation Department, pursued and arrested Thinh. On April 7, Thinh was arrested in Dak Lak province. At the police station, Thinh said that he had previously lived with his wife and child in an apartment in An Hoa Tay ward. Although he had stable employment, he invested in the stock market hoping to get rich quickly but failed. Not giving up, Thinh borrowed to recover his capital but his losses continued to grow. In early April 2026, Thinh was forced to redeem his house to return to Dak Lak. On his way to Ben Xe Mien Dong, Thinh conceived the idea of grabbing the lottery tickets from the man.
