The Van Phong airport in Khanh Hoa province is planned to be built on a nearshore water area covering about 497 hectares, with a total investment of more than 9.21 trillion dong. If approved, it would be Vietnam’s first offshore aviation infrastructure project.
The Ministry of Construction has submitted to competent authorities for review and approval an outline amendment to the national airport system master plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050. The revision focuses on proposing two new airports—Mang Den and Van Phong—and upgrading Quang Tri airport from code 4C to 4E to meet long-term demand, supporting a more flexible aviation infrastructure network aligned with international trends.
The Van Phong airport project is proposed for Van Thang commune, Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province, about 65 km from Nha Trang city. The study’s most notable feature is that the airport would be built on the water surface, covering more than 497 hectares.
The project is oriented to meet 4E standards. It is designed to handle about 1.5 million passenger movements per year by 2030, with expansion to about 2.5 million per year by 2050. The estimated total investment is more than 9.21 trillion dong. If implemented, Van Phong would become Vietnam’s first airport built entirely on water.
According to a representative of Khanh Hoa province, the proposal is consistent with the master plan for the Van Phong Economic Zone to 2040 with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister in March 2023, as well as the land-use plan of Van Ninh district.
In the amendment document for the comprehensive plan to develop the aviation port system for 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam proposed that by 2030 Vietnam would have 33 airports with capacity for 297 million passengers. By 2050, the plan would increase to 36 airports serving nearly 540 million passengers per year.
Recently, the Ministry of Construction submitted to the Prime Minister the outline for adjusting the aviation port system planning for 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050, including proposals to add new airports.
