The visit by Vietnam’s General Secretary and President To Lam to China produced results of strategic significance, Vietnam’s spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said at the regular press briefing on April 23. She noted that the state visit, held from April 14 to 17, delivered “many important results, rich and of strategic significance.”
Pham Thu Hang said the trip was the first foreign visit by To Lam after the 16th National Assembly of Vietnam reappointed the country’s leadership, building on the success of the 14th Party Congress. She added that Vietnam and China viewed the visit as the most important diplomatic activity for Vietnam–China relations in 2026 as both countries enter a new development stage.
According to the spokesperson, both sides expressed special regard for the visit, reflecting political trust at a high level and a shared desire to elevate bilateral relations and support each country’s development.
She said the two top leaders of the Parties and states reached consensus on common understandings and set major directions to promote substantive cooperation across all fields, leveraging each side’s strengths.
The spokesperson also highlighted that the two sides reached high agreement on the Joint Statement of the visit. She said it reaffirmed guiding ideas and shared understandings between the top leaders, supported the socialist path of each country, and outlined development directions for Vietnam–China friendship in the new era.
The Joint Statement includes measures across economy, trade, investment, transport connectivity, tourism, science and technology, education and training, innovation, and a green economy. The spokesperson said this deepened the comprehensive strategic partnership and laid the foundation for a Vietnam–China community with a shared future of strategic significance.
During the visit, 32 cooperation documents were signed between ministries and localities. In addition, a large number of agreements between universities and enterprises were signed, providing a basis to institutionalize and enhance cooperation across sectors.
Pham Thu Hang said To Lam’s activities during the trip were especially vibrant, including engagements with youth and border communities, strengthening the long-term foundation for the bilateral relationship.
She added that the launch of the Vietnam–China Tourism Cooperation Year 2026–2027 is expected to promote tourism cooperation and facilitate travel of people and tourists between the two countries.
The two sides also discussed regional and international issues, emphasizing positive coordination and mutual support in the international arena to create favorable conditions for peace and stability in each country.
The spokesperson said the visit ended successfully, elevating strategic connectivity and strengthening foreign relations. She added that Vietnam–China relations would become more practical for the benefit of the people in the new era, contributing positively to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and globally.
