Early detection of signs that a computer or phone is being tracked can help protect personal information and reduce data security risks. In the digital age, phones and computers store much of users’ important information, but devices can be infected with spyware or monitored by malicious actors. Below are common indicators that a device may be under surveillance.
Unusually hot devices and rapid battery drain: If a phone or laptop becomes hot without heavy use, or the battery drains quickly even with light apps, spyware may be running in the background.
Sudden spikes in data usage: If users are not using much data but 3G/4G or Wi‑Fi data usage spikes, the device may be quietly sending data out.
Unfamiliar apps or abnormal permissions: Users should review the list of apps on the device. Apps that were not installed—or cannot be recalled—can be suspicious. It is also a concern if any app requests camera, microphone, or location permissions without a clear reason.
Camera or microphone turning on by itself: Some devices display a light or icon when the camera or microphone is active. If these indicators appear while users are not using apps that require camera or microphone access, remote monitoring may be possible.
Strange messages or odd sounds during calls: Messages containing unusual characters or encrypted text, or noises heard during calls, may indicate software that can be controlled via SMS.
Abnormal behavior when not in use: If the screen lights up by itself while the device is idle, the device restarts, apps open automatically, or sounds play without user interaction, this could indicate remote control by spyware or malware.
