On the morning of April 24, General Secretary and President Tô Lâm held a telephone conversation with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the headquarters of the Central Committee, exchanging views on bilateral relations and directions for cooperation in the time ahead.
Prime Minister Albanese congratulated General Secretary Tô Lâm on being elected President by the XVIth National Assembly and said Australia is interested in further strengthening relations with Vietnam across all fields.
Albanese expressed admiration for Vietnam’s rapid and comprehensive development, linking these achievements to the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam. He also stated that Australia will continue to accompany, support and assist Vietnam in its reform efforts toward the goal of becoming a high-income country by 2045.
Albanese said Australia’s stability, security and prosperity are closely tied to Southeast Asia, with Vietnam among its top partners, and emphasized Australia’s support for ASEAN’s central role.
For his part, General Secretary and President Tô Lâm congratulated Albanese and the Australian Labor Party on their victory in the May 2025 general election. He cited achievements in governance, macroeconomic stability, social welfare, energy transition and green economy development, and expressed confidence that Australia will continue to contribute positively to peace, stability and prosperity in the region and the world.
The two leaders also described Australia as a reliable partner and a Comprehensive Strategic Partner with growing potential, status and role in the region. They said Vietnam and Australia share strategic interests and orientations toward inclusive development, green transition, digital economy and strategic autonomy.
The leaders noted that Vietnam–Australia relations continue to grow strongly, materially and effectively. They said the pillar areas under the Action Program for implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the 2024–2027 period have been implemented on schedule, with current completion at around 96%.
Given complex shifts in the world affecting regional and global supply chains, the two sides agreed to intensify cooperation to address international issues of joint concern, including security and safety of sea lanes and energy security.
They also agreed to continue strengthening political trust through regular exchanges and contacts across Party, State and people-to-people channels. Cooperation will be promoted in defense–security, trade–investment, science and technology, digital transformation, climate change response, energy and maritime cooperation.
General Secretary and President Tô Lâm asked the Australian government to continue facilitating Vietnamese intellectuals, experts and scientists in Australia, as well as the Vietnamese community there, to support development and to help promote Vietnamese cultural values in Australia.
On this occasion, Vietnam expressed the hope that Prime Minister Albanese will visit again soon. Australia also invited General Secretary and President Tô Lâm to visit Australia at a suitable time.
