Authorities have issued a warning about a Facebook scam that fakes a child kidnapping to solicit donations. After the post attracts significant engagement, the attackers reportedly edit the content to request charitable transfers, using the heightened public attention to facilitate fraud.
Officials say the scheme is designed to exploit public worry, anxiety, and sympathy in order to seize assets. The scam also includes tactics intended to reduce scrutiny, including locking the comments section to limit dissent and make it harder to identify misinformation.
The Thanh Khê Ward Police Station urged residents to remain vigilant and not share, comment on, or relay unverified information. Authorities also warned that reposting initial posts before facts are confirmed can mislead others into believing the content is official, unintentionally helping criminals carry out online fraud.
Thanh Khê Police are coordinating with city police units to promptly verify and trace accounts that posted and spread false information, and to take strict legal action.
Da Nang City Police advised the public to verify information through official sources, be cautious of sensational content that targets anxiety, and avoid any requests for money in any form—particularly posts that show signs of being altered after gaining attention.
For matters related to security and public order, residents were instructed to promptly report to the nearest police authorities so the information can be received and processed, supporting stability in the locality.
