Hai Phong City Police’s Criminal Police Department, Special Task Force, has busted an extortion case, arresting the director and deputy director of VIETCOMMS MEDIA.
Investigations indicate the suspects exploited the company’s media identity to extort assets from multiple local businesses. VIETCOMMS MEDIA operates a network of Facebook groups with high engagement, including Hai Phong Dining, Hai Phong Today—What to Eat, Beat Hai Phong, and Beat Thuy Nguyen.
Group members allegedly used fake accounts to post or approve negative content about service businesses. When business owners contacted for information, Lam and Tai reportedly refused to engage directly with the posters and instead demanded that the businesses sign commercial contracts.
The contracts are typically labeled “Media Sponsorship” or “Crisis Management Support,” with fees ranging from 30 million to 60 million VND per year. Police said many business owners signed and paid due to concerns about their online reputation, even when the services were not needed.
After the funds were activated, negative posts on the pages and groups managed by the network were removed.
Police assess that the leaders’ actions have caused public discontent within the business community and affected the local investment environment.
The Criminal Police Department is continuing to expand the investigation to determine the full scope of the operation.
Victims are urged to contact Investigator Hoang Kim Thai at 0904.127.567 to provide information and protect their legal rights.
