On April 6, following the opening session of the 16th National Assembly’s First Session, the Assembly held a private meeting on personnel matters and elected the Chairman of the National Assembly for the XVI term.
The National Assembly voted to approve a resolution electing the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the XVI term. The vote was unanimous among those present, with 100% voting in favor.
According to the resolution, 491 out of 491 deputies participated in the vote, representing 98.20% of the total number of deputies.
The resolution states that Mr. Trần Thanh Mẫn, a Politburo member and former Chairman of the XV National Assembly, who is a Deputy for the XVI term, shall hold the position of Chairman of the National Assembly for the XVI term. The resolution takes effect from the time it is passed by the National Assembly.
Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn was born on 12 August 1962. His hometown is Thanh Xuân commune, Chau Thanh A district, Hau Giang province. He is of Kinh ethnicity and joined the Communist Party on 25 August 1982.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in political theory and a PhD in Economics.
He is a member of the Politburo for the 13th and 14th terms and served as Secretary of the Party Central Committee for the 12th term. He has also been an alternate member of the Central Committee for the 10th (vacant), 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th terms. He has served as a Deputy for the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th National Assemblies.
Prior to this election, Trần Thanh Mẫn served as Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front from July 2017 to March 2021. He also served as Deputy Head of the Parliamentary Group’s Secretariat and Acting Vice-Chairman from April 1, 2021 to May 2024.
He was Chairman of the Vietnam–Laos Parliamentary Friendship Group (November 2021) and Chairman of the Vietnam–Laos Parliamentary Caucus (November 2021).
In the 7th Session of the 15th National Assembly (May 2024), Trần Thanh Mẫn was elected Chairman of the National Assembly and has held the position since.
