With 491 of 491 National Assembly deputies voting in favor, the National Assembly approved a resolution to elect Mr. Tran Thanh Man as Chairman of the XV National Assembly, making him Chairman of the XVI National Assembly for the 2026–2031 term. The election took place during the opening session on April 6, as the XVI National Assembly moved into personnel work, including the selection of its Chairman.
The National Assembly conducted the election of Mr. Tran Thanh Man as Chairman of the XVI National Assembly by secret ballot. The ballot results were reported to the National Assembly before it voted on the resolution. Immediately after the resolution was approved, Chairman Tran Thanh Man took the oath of office.
“Under the sacred red flag of the homeland, before the National Assembly, the people of the country, I, the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, do solemnly swear: to be absolutely loyal to the Fatherland, to the people, to the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and to strive to fulfill the duties assigned by the Party, the State, and the people,” Chairman Tran Thanh Man swore.
Following the oath, Chairman Tran Thanh Man delivered a speech to the National Assembly and the people nationwide.
Chairman Tran Thanh Man was born in 1962 in Can Tho City and holds a Doctorate in Economics. He is a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party for the 10th (alternate), 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th terms, and a Politburo member for the 13th and 14th terms. He has served as a deputy to the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th National Assemblies.
His career includes many years in the Can Tho City Youth Union. Since July 1994, he has served in roles including Chief of Office, Vice Chairman, and Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee. He was Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee before becoming Vice Chairman, then President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee.
In April 2021, he was elected Vice Chairman of the National Assembly. In July 2021, he was elected Vice Chairman of the National Assembly for the 15th term and later appointed as the Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly. In May 2024, during the 7th session of the 15th National Assembly, he was trusted to be elected Chairman of the National Assembly.
Later on the same day, the National Assembly will elect several Vice Presidents of the National Assembly and members of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly. It will also elect the Chairman of the National Assembly’s Ethnic Council, the Chairman of the National Assembly’s Committees, the State Auditor General, and the Secretary General of the National Assembly—Head of the National Assembly’s Office.
