Inflation accelerated in March to the hottest level since May 2024, driven by higher energy prices that are filtering through the economy and complicating the Federal Reserve’s path toward interest-rate cuts.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.3% in March from a year earlier, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, up from 2.4% in February.
Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, increased 2.6% over the year, compared with 2.5% in February.
The report pointed to a sharp rise in gasoline prices, with gasoline up 21.2% on a monthly basis.
The hotter inflation reading is an early indication of how the Middle East conflict may be affecting prices.
