On April 10, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety said it had taken a preliminary step by requiring the school meal provider for Bình Quới Tây Primary School to suspend operations to support the investigation by relevant authorities.
Initial investigation results indicate that Bình Quới Tây Primary School signed a contract to supply ready-made meals for boarding students with the Branch of Hữu Phước Transportation, Manufacturing and Trading Services Co., Ltd. (address: 102/23 Xô Viết Nghệ Tĩnh, Ward Thạnh Mỹ Tây, Ho Chi Minh City).
On April 7, meals were prepared at the branch and transported to the school for portioning. The lunch menu included rice, ginger-braised chicken, cabbage soup with meat, cucumber stir-fry, and plums. The snack was flan.
On April 7, a total of 740 students used lunch in two time slots at 10:30 and 11:00. The snack was served at 14:30.
On April 8 and 9, the school medical room and the Bình Quới Ward Medical Station received many students with fever and abdominal pain. By 3:00 PM on April 9, 107 students had abnormal symptoms and sought treatment at hospitals.
On April 8, retained food samples from the school were sent by the Bình Quới Ward People’s Committee to the Ho Chi Minh City Public Health Institute for testing. At the same time, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety requested Gia Định People’s Hospital to test samples to collect data supporting the investigation.
The Department of Food Safety said it is coordinating closely with the Department of Health, the Bình Quới Ward People’s Committee, and relevant agencies to continue updating patients’ health status, tally the number of cases and treatments, and await results from tests on ingredients and specimens to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Further investigation steps will be conducted to ensure scientific rigor and compliance with legal regulations.
