National Assembly's leadership appointments and elections for President and Prime Minister scheduled for today

Today (April 7), the 16th National Assembly continues its work on personnel matters, including the election of the President and the Prime Minister, as well as several other senior leadership posts.

Morning session: President election and government structure

Under the session program, from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m., the National Assembly will meet in private to hear the Standing Committee’s report on the results of approving personnel for the positions of Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly, deputy heads of committees, and members who serve as full-time MPs.

Thereafter, the Standing Committee will submit the list of nominees to the National Assembly for the election of the President. The National Assembly will discuss and vote to approve the list to elect the President using the electronic voting system, followed by a secret ballot.

From 9:15 to 9:45 a.m., the Standing Committee will present the draft Resolution electing the President, and the National Assembly will vote to pass it via the electronic voting system. Immediately after, the President-elect will take the oath and deliver an inaugural address.

From 10:45 to 11:30 a.m., a representative of the Government for the 2021–2026 term will present the draft on the Government’s structure for the 2026–2031 term. The Chair of the National Assembly’s Legal and Judicial Committees will present the appraisal report on the Government’s organization for the 2026–2031 term.

After that, the National Assembly will vote to approve the Resolution on the Government’s structure for the 2026–2031 term using the electronic voting system.

Afternoon session: Prime Minister and other top posts

In the afternoon, the President will present the list of nominees to the National Assembly for the election of the Prime Minister, Vice President, Chief Justice of the Supreme People’s Court, and the Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Court. After the list is approved, the National Assembly will elect the Prime Minister by secret ballot.

From 3:00 to 3:30 p.m., the Standing Committee will present to the National Assembly the draft Resolution on the election of the Prime Minister. The National Assembly will vote to approve the Resolution on the election of the Prime Minister by electronic voting. Immediately after, the Prime Minister-elect will take the oath of office.

From 3:30 p.m., the National Assembly will elect the Deputy President, Chief Justice, and Prosecutor General by secret ballot. After the resolutions are approved, the Chief Justice will take the oath and deliver an inaugural address.

From 5:10 p.m., the National Assembly will elect and approve the resolutions on the Deputy President and the Prosecutor General by electronic voting.

Earlier, on April 6, the National Assembly elected Mr. Trần Thanh Mẫn as Chairman of the National Assembly for the 16th tenure; elected six Vice Presidents and nine heads of National Assembly agencies.
