U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell convened an emergency meeting with bank chief executives this week to warn about cybersecurity risks posed by Anthropic’s newly released AI model, Mythos, according to two people familiar with the discussions.
The meeting was organized by the Treasury Department in Washington on April 7. The goal was to ensure banks are aware of risks associated with Mythos and similar models and to implement protective measures. Invitations were sent while many of the CEOs of major U.S. banks were already in Washington for other meetings.
Mythos was unveiled earlier this week and has not yet been widely deployed due to concerns about undisclosed security vulnerabilities. Anthropic describes the model as capable of identifying and exploiting weaknesses across major operating systems and popular web browsers.
Last week, Anthropic said it was in discussions with U.S. government officials about the model’s potential attack and defense capabilities. A separate source said Anthropic proactively provided information about Mythos to senior officials and industry stakeholders before its launch.
According to Anthropic, access to Mythos will be limited to about 40 technology companies, including Microsoft and Google.
Reuters reported that CEOs attending the meeting included those from Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon was unable to attend.
