Construction has begun on the high-speed Hanoi–Quang Ninh railway project, with total investment of more than 147,000 billion dong (equivalent to over USD 5.6 billion), excluding land clearance costs. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
The railway will run 120.2 km, connecting Hanoi with Quang Ninh and passing through Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh. It will be built as a double-tracked, standard-gauge line (1,435 mm) and electrified along the entire route.
Design speeds are set at a maximum of 350 km/h, with the Hanoi section operating at up to 120 km/h.
Service will start at Co Loa Station in Hanoi and end at Ha Long Station in Quang Ninh. Transfer stations along the route include Gia Binh (Bac Ninh), Ninh Xa (Hai Phong) and Yen Tu (Quang Ninh), with a depot located at Ha Long.
Once operational, the investor expects travel time between Hanoi and Quang Ninh to fall to about 23 minutes—around 5–7 times faster than current travel times.
The investor said the project will use the latest generation of high-speed trains and modern signaling and equipment systems supplied by Siemens Mobility. Siemens Mobility also committed to technology transfer to VinSpeed during operations, aimed at helping develop a domestic high-speed rail industrial ecosystem in Vietnam.
