President Donald Trump said he would extend the deadline for the Iran deal by two weeks if Iran agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said the conditional ceasefire is intended to clear the way for negotiations to end the war, and he ordered airstrikes in Yemen.
Trump said that, based on conversations with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, he would suspend “the bombing and attack of Iran” for two weeks. The suspension would be conditional on Iran agreeing to the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz,” he said in a Truth Social post on Tuesday evening.
Iran’s Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a public statement that “for a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible” through coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces, with “due consideration of technical limitations.”
The Dow began trending upward shortly before the ceasefire news broke, with investors showing optimism about a last-minute deal. After Trump’s announcement, it rose by several hundred points.
Oil prices fell following the ceasefire announcement. West Texas Intermediate dropped more than 12% as of 7 p.m. ET.
The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20% of the world’s total oil supply. Iran’s blockade has pushed the national average oil price per gallon above $4 as of April 7, according to AAA.
Leaders of other countries have been working to broker peace in the region. On Tuesday afternoon, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asked Trump for a two-week extension of his threat and urged Iran’s leaders to agree to open the strait for two weeks “as a goodwill gesture.”
On Monday, Trump said he received a 10-point proposal from Tehran and described it as “significant” but “not good enough” during a press conference. In his Tuesday night Truth Social post, he said the proposal provides a “workable basis” for negotiations and that a two-week period would allow the agreement to be finalized and “consummated.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to Business Insider that Trump’s comments “speak for themselves” and that the 10-point proposal is a “basis to negotiate” as talks continue.
Israel has also agreed to the ceasefire.
