Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son signed Decision No. 629/QD-TTg dated April 6, 2026, approving Vietnam’s plan to participate in GREEN EXPO 2027 in Yokohama, Japan. The decision assigns the ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development; Culture, Sports and Tourism; Foreign Affairs; Finance; Industry and Trade; Science and Technology, together with the chairpersons of centrally-run provinces and cities and heads of related agencies, to implement the plan.
The Vietnamese Pavilion at GREEN EXPO 2027 will operate from March 19, 2027, to September 26, 2027, in Yokohama. The display space is designed with flexible modules that can be rearranged according to weekly or monthly themes.
Within the expo framework, Vietnam will conduct core activity groups, including periodic promotional events to introduce key agricultural products, OCOP products, handicrafts, and sustainable green farming models linked to sustainable development, with participation from localities. The plan also includes trade promotion and investment activities, promotion of the green economy and circular economy, and digital transformation.
Public interaction programs will be organized regularly, including cultural experiences and direct exchanges to promote Vietnam’s image, people, and products.
A highlight of the participation is the organization of a Vietnam National Day within the exhibition. The Vietnamese Pavilion will also be built and operated as a 3D virtual platform.
Funding for the plan will be ensured from the state budget, while the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will be tasked with mobilizing additional social resources.
In organizational terms, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will lead, in coordination with other ministries and related agencies, to establish the Vietnam GREEN EXPO 2027 Organizing Committee; implement activities according to the plan; operate the Vietnamese Pavilion; develop display content; and promote the national image, key agricultural products, OCOP products, handicrafts, and sustainable development models.
The ministry will also draft budget estimates, submit them to the Ministry of Finance for appraisal, and report to competent authorities for consideration in accordance with regulations. It will report to the Prime Minister on efficiency, practicality, and legal compliance during implementation, and provide results after the exhibition to serve as a basis for proposing future participation or hosting GREEN EXPO events.
GREEN EXPO 2027, also known as the International Horticultural Exposition 2027 in Yokohama, Japan, is an international event focused on gardening and sustainable development. It was recognized as an A1 Horticultural Expo by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) on September 9, 2019. The Bureau of International Expositions (BIE) officially approved the event at the 171st General Assembly on November 28, 2022, under the Convention on International Exhibitions.
The expo is expected to serve as a global forum to propose solutions to issues including climate change and biodiversity loss, and to help shape future societal models. A key highlight is the emphasis on the natural circularity principle inherent in plant ecosystems.
The expo will be held in Yokohama, about 30 km southwest of Tokyo. The total exhibition area is about 100 hectares, including 80 hectares for exhibition space. Although located in an urban area, the site includes a rich natural ecosystem with arable land, meadows, water sources, and nearby forests, supporting diverse habitats. After the expo concludes, most of the area will be converted into a park managed by the city government to continue spreading the event’s values and achievements.
