Mr. Lê Minh Hưng, a member of the Politburo and Secretary of the Central Committee, and head of the Party’s Organization Commission, was elected by the National Assembly to the office of Prime Minister for the 2026–2031 term. On April 7, during the First Session, under the leadership of Politburo member and National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn, the XVIII National Assembly convened a private session to conduct personnel work. In the session, the President submitted the list of nominees for the National Assembly to elect as Prime Minister. The Assembly discussed and approved the list to elect the Prime Minister using electronic voting. Thereafter, the National Assembly elected the Prime Minister by a secret ballot. The Standing Committee of the National Assembly presented to the Assembly a draft Resolution on the election of the Prime Minister. With 495 out of 495 deputies voting in favor, the National Assembly approved the Resolution electing the Prime Minister for the 2026–2031 term, Mr. Lê Minh Hưng. Immediately after the Assembly’s approval, the newly sworn-in Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng took the oath. Under the sacred red flag of the Fatherland, before the National Assembly and the people, the voters of the country, the Prime Minister pledged: “Absolutely loyal to the Fatherland, to the people, to the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and to strive to fulfill the tasks entrusted by the Party, the State, and the people.” Mr. Lê Minh Hưng was born on December 11, 1970; his hometown is Tu Mỹ commune, Hà Tĩnh province. He holds advanced degrees in political theory, a Master’s in Public Policy, a Bachelor’s in Public Policy, and a degree in French. Summary of Career: From 1993 to 1998 he served as a specialist in the IMF’s International Monetary Fund, International Relations Department, State Bank of Vietnam; attended IMF courses in Shanghai (1996) and a Master’s in Economics at Saitama University, Japan (1996–1997). From 1998 to 2002 he was Deputy Head/Head of the Asia Development Bank cooperation unit at the State Bank. From 2002 to 2009 he held roles in the International Cooperation Department, State Bank. From 2010 to 2011 he was a member of the Party Central Committee staff, head of the Organization–Personnel Department; from 2011 to 2014 he served as a member of the Party Central Committee staff, Deputy Governor of the State Bank; from 2014 to 2016 he was Deputy Chief of Staff, and by early 2016 he became a member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat, then Secretary of the Party Central Committee, and Governor of the State Bank (2016–2020); from 2020 to 2021 he was a member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat, Chief of Staff of the Secretariat; from 2021 to 2024 he was Party Secretary of the Central Committee and Chief of Staff, and a member of the Central Committee; from 2024 he served as a Politburo member, Secretary of the Central Committee, Head of the Organization Commission, and a member of the Party Central Committee’s anti-corruption and internal discipline bodies; he has been a National Assembly deputy (XV and XVI) since 2021. In March 2026 he was assigned to take part in the XIV Party Central Committee’s Secretariat; on 7 April 2026 at the First Session, the XVI National Assembly elected Lê Minh Hưng Prime Minister for the 2026–2031 term.
