The National Assembly on the morning of April 7 approved a resolution to elect the President of the State for the 2026–2031 term using an electronic voting system after a secret ballot. All 495 delegates present voted in favor, representing 100% approval.
With 495 out of 495 delegates voting in favor, the National Assembly approved the draft resolution electing General Secretary Tô Lâm as President of the State for the 2026–2031 term. The resolution entrusts General Secretary Tô Lâm with holding the office of President for the new term.
The decision marks the second time General Secretary Tô Lâm has simultaneously held the two top positions of the Party and the State.
After the election, the President carried out an oath-taking ceremony in front of the National Assembly and the public. President Tô Lâm swore: “Under the sacred red flag of the Fatherland, before the National Assembly, the people and voters, I, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, swear to be absolutely loyal to the Fatherland, to the People, to the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and to strive to fulfill all duties entrusted by the Party, the State, and the People.”
The President of the National Assembly, Trần Thanh Mẫn, spoke on behalf of the National Assembly to acknowledge the oath.
